Church of Saint John the Baptist

Small Romanesque-style hermitage that houses the Romanesque Information Point

This small archetypal rural Romanesque temple, built in the 12th century, arrived to the city after the flooding of the town of Villanueva del Río, where the hermitage was originally located, for the building of the Aguilar Reservoir. In order to avoid its disappearance, the temple was dismantled stone by stone and carefully relocated in La Huerta de Guadián. Today it is possible to appreciate in the head of the church the numbering the conservatives used to rebuild it. It was declared a National Monument in 1981 and nowadays it houses the Romanesque Information Point.
