An emblematic sculpture that exceeds 20 meters in height and is the undisputed symbol of the city
It is, without a doubt, one of the symbols of the city and one of the most beloved icons of the people of Palencia, visible from many parts of the city. This enormous sculpture - its more than 20 meters make it the second tallest reproduction of a Christ in Europe and the fifth tallest in the world - bears the signature of the brilliant sculptor from Palencia, Victorio Macho (1886-1966), the forerunner of Spanish contemporary sculpture and, who after recognizing this as his most important work, was buried in the crypt of the hermitage of Santa María del Otero, excavated at the foot of the carving. As a matter of fact, this sanctuary houses a small museum dedicated to the artistic projects that the artist carried out. Built in 1931, it features an Art Deco-style, with Cubist resonances, and echoes of Ancient Egyptian art in the figure's hieratic posture.
